Handmade Jet and Sterling Silver Inlay Shawl Pin
I made this for my mom when I was living in Colorado. I got the black jet from my local gem dealer. He used to arrive on his motorcycle with his bag full of beautiful rocks in his back pack.
Another jeweler showed me how to do inlay.
My mom had just purchased this huge ruana shawl in heavy wool and needed something to fasten it with.
I designed and made this one of a kind piece for her.
It is 6.19 grams of sterling with a 10 x 22 mm jet cabochon and a sterling silver rose inlay.
The whole piece is 4 inches (1 cm) long.
I stamped it with my first registered trademark; an Egyptian eye (I was smitten by the King Tut exhibit which had just come to the US).

Jet is a type of lignite, a precursor to coal, and is a gemstone. Jet is not a mineral, but rather a mineraloid. It has an organic origin, being derived from decaying wood under extreme pressure.

"A ruana is a poncho-style outer garment typical of the Andes region of Venezuela and ... the word ruana comes from the Chibcha ruana meaning "Land of Blankets," used to refer to the woolen fabrics manufactured by the Muisca natives."
