Vintage Squash Blossom Necklace
This came down to me from my mother, and she loved this necklace. The last picture is of her and a painting someone did of her wearing the necklace.
There are no stamp marks of any kind, which is not unusual for the period.
There are however, lots of tool marks on each squash blossom, and along with the seams on the beads it tells me that each piece and bead were all handmade.
I have searched the web and can't find one like it, so it is most likely one of a kind from an unknown jeweler who was not well known at the time.
I think it more likely to be Navajo instead of Zuni, but it could be either.
It could be have been made anytime from the 1930's to the 1940's.
It weighs a total of 78 grams and has 12 of the 8 x 11 mm oval stones.
There is one 6 mm round stone in the center of the Naja.
The length of the necklace is 19 inches and the center drop Naja is 2 inches in size.
The turquoise is natural and untreated with some brown matrix and is a slightly greenish turquoise color.
It looks to have been restrung at some point with modern tiger tail and a sterling silver hook and eye clasp.
